Modeling and simulation on effectiveness of communication services system in WAMS

The reliability of wide area measurement system (WAMS) plays a vital role as it serves as an important part of modern power system and smart grid, the effectiveness of communication services in WAMS has a direct impact on its own system functions. Referring to the existing communication network structure in WAMS, this paper established a physical model of WAMS communication network including four components of PMU's communication module in sub-station, regional communication network, regional phasor data center (PDC) and backbone communication network. According to the theory of communication network reliability measures based on the average of the whole network services performance, it proposed a logic model of a single service effectiveness integrating three feature indices (network channel, transmission delay and data reliability). And according to the application requirements of WAMS data services and the characteristics of collection-type communication, it gave out system effectiveness indices and calculation formula based on reliability series model. It studied the analysis method of system element importance about system effectiveness in WAMS communication. By Monte Carlo simulation, the system effectiveness of communication services and sorting order of system elements importance was obtained on the IEEE 14 nodes system of WAMS. © 2012 Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.
