Elevated levels of human factor IX (hFIX) in subjects with an objectively con- firmed first episode of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) increase the risk of DVT by a factor of 2 to 3 [3]. A useful marker of increased procoagulant activity, which has already been shown to be associated with DVT and VT as well as other clinical conditions, is the D-dimer [1]
