•Cristobalite has a larger tendency to form colloids compared with other accessary minerals in the bentonite.•The CCC of the bentonite colloids is strongly PZC dependent owing to the aggregation mechanism transition.•A strong edge-edge repulsion effect has been proposed in strongly alkaline conditions.
