Surface-Diffusion Probed By Linear Optical Diffraction

It is demonstrated that linear diffraction off an adsorbate monolayer grating can be used to study surface diffusion of the adsorbates. The signal-to-noise ratio is greatly enhanced with a polarization modulation scheme. The example of CO on Ni(110) shows that the coverage dependence of the surface diffusion coefficient can be significant.
