By means of 57Fe-labelled ferrocene, the simultaneous formation of free electrons and of ferricinium guest species under intercalation conditions at room temperature could be verified. At low temperature there exist instable dynamic equilibria, viz: Ferrocene ⇌ Ferricinium+ + “e−” in the guest layers and “e−” + Fe3+OCl ⇌ [Fe2+param.OCl]− or gFe2+ antiferrom. OCl]− in the host layers which show irreversible phase transitions. A stabilization and passivation effect of the FeOCl intercalation compounds is also described.
