Training Of Qualified Medical Physicists: Problems And Struggles In Afomp Region

Definition of "qualified medical physicists" and method of training of them in Asia Oceania countries have been tried to be developed. "Qualified medical physicists" really exist in North America, Europe and Australia. Medical physicist is defined by IOMP, IAEA, EFOMP and even by AFOMP.For the purpose of seizing situation and problems, surveys in member countries of AFOMP were carried out during 2004, 2005 and 2008. Information which came from these surveys showed that there were: (1) demands for certification and/or accreditation of medical physicist, (2) difficulties in defining a qualified medical physicist, (3) the highest priority for radiation oncology physics, (4) a diversity in level and quality of medical physicists among AFOMP countries. (5) high workload of physicists with more than 500 patients per year per physicist.We found also:(1) A structured clinical training program is necessary. (2) The number of patients per physicist varies more significantly (250 to 800). (3) Medical physicists share a common work environment and face similar challenges independent of the country they are working in. (4) AFOMP has an important role to play by defining professional responsibilities and educational standard, and also by bringing physicists together and organizing conferences and workshops.IAEA.RCA project RAS6038 " Strengthening medical physics through education and training" started several years ago, and now really in intensive activity. AFOMP ETC has been cooperated with this project. Countries which have their own problems inside should solve in their own way, but toward common target of increasing number of "qualified medical physicists" as many as possible, maintaining high level of jobs and appreciation from patients through health insurance foundations.
