Towards a Reference Model for Knowledge Networking

The following paper, written from a business engineering perspective (WKWI 1994, 80-81; Mertens 1998), therefore seeks to integrate the two dimensions knowledge and networks as well for the academic community as for practical application. Considering its economic relevance, the paper will focus on the requirements and possibilities in creating innovative Information- and Communication Technology solutions and their integration into a complete concept for knowledge networks. To illustrate the theoretical foundations, it seems helpful to first sketch out the approach and the proposed design of the research. Building on this framework, the third chapter will look at the demands knowledge management makes when developing knowledge networks. While unfolding the epistemological foundations, the term knowledge will be defined and the implications for the design of knowledge networks will be deduced. On this basis, a design of a referential model for knowledge networks is suggested. This referential model will then serve as a foundation in defining the requirements of the support of Information and Communication Technologies in the context of knowledge networks. In chapter four, the application possibilities for innovative ICT will be presented according to specific fundamental concepts of business engineering. Those will, together with the requirements deduced from the referential model, pose the starting point in developing ICT design potentials for knowledge networks, which will be discussed in chapter five. The design possibilities will first be developed from a process view and then integrated into the knowledge network referential model. The contribution concludes with a short summary of the results and some suggestions and implications for further research.
