Difference Method For Wave Analysis Of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar With A Viscoelastic Specimen

This paper presents an original method, using finite difference approximations, for describing stress-wave propagation in a split Hopkinson pressure bar with a viscoelastic specimen. The difference scheme for the elastic bar is briefly reviewed, and the schemes for the viscoelastic bar and interface boundaries are derived in detail. An experiment with a split Hopkinson pressure bar is described, and the experimental data obtained are subjected to conventional analysis and to wave analysis by the difference method. A method of obtaining the complex moduli of the viscoelastic specimen by parameter conversion is also demonstrated.
