Conceptual Design of 100 HP Synchronous Motor with HTS Field Winding

Based on two-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis, a 100 hp superconducting motor in the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program of Korea was designed and the electrical characteristics will be evaluated. The motor is composed of high temperature superconducting (HTS) racetrack field winding and air-gap armature winding. The HTS field winding is composed by double pancake coils wound with Bi-2223 HTS tapes. We could decide the operating current of the HTS tape conductor by estimating the calculated magnetic field distribution in the HTS field winding and the Ic-B characteristics of a practical HTS tape conductor.
