Phoebus: A Session Protocol for Dynamic and Heterogeneous Networks

In this paper we present a session protocol and in- frastructure for high-performance, long-distance net- works. Phoebus allows the creation of data transfer ses- sions that are not bound directly to a single end-to-end transport connection. Using Phoebus "Gateways" as middleboxes, we can use segment-specific transport pro- tocols and can hide the allocation details when utiliz- ing dynamic network resources. We demonstrate perfor- mance improvement across Internet2's IP and Dynamic Circuit (DC) HOPI testbed.
