The effect of liposomal moisturizing cream on dry skin: a preliminary double-blind study

The moisturizing effect of a liposomal preparation was evaluated and compared with a commercially available moisturizing preparation in a double-blind randomized left/right clinical trial in 17 subjects. The liposomal moisturizing cream was formulated from both multi-and unilamellar vesicles averaging 100 nm in diameter, composed of soy lecithin and cholesterol. A modified version of the regression method was used in the trial and the patients were treated for 2 weeks. There was a small but significant difference in moisturizing efficiency of the two preparations in favour of the control preparation after 1 and 2 weeks treatment (P = 0.02 and 0.03, respectively). However, patient acceptance was significantly higher for the preparation containing the liposomes.
