Investigating Statistical Approaches to Building a Phonology

work in this area, and suggest ways in which current trends in machine learning and statistical approaches to sound categorization can be integrated with long-standing observations in phonetics and phonology. We present a computer simulation of the acquisition of the Inuktitut vowel space that speaks to the feasibility of this approach as a way of modeling the entire acquisition process, from perception to phonology.
