This paper presents results of multidisciplinary, university-industry collaborative effort investigating design of an agile and flexible Scheduler for Production and Material Optimisation in Multi-Site enterprises. The objective of the IS-OPTIMUS project is the realisation and on-the-field validation of a scheduling tool for integrating turbulent manufacturing environments into an extended manufacturing network taking into account the importance of product mix and short lead times combined with delivering optimum cutting patterns and product arrangements for the processing of 2D board components. Finally, this tool has been deployed in three pilots where the benefits gained have been a considerable increase in the efficiency of their manufacturing resources, reduction of raw material and inventory costs and a reduced response time in dealing with customer orders.
