SUMMARY The methods described in these guidelines include information regarding both new and conventional techniques applicable to the recovery, identification and drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. They enable laboratories to provide accurate diagnosis of tuberculosis and a guidance to chemotherapy within a clinically relevant time frame. Safety issues and levels of laboratory service are also addressed.
