A first chemical synthesis of GlcNAc beta(1 -> 4)GlcUA-UDP is described here. This compound can be an essential tool to elucidate the catalytic mechanism of hyaluronic acid synthases (HAS) and this synthetic strategy contributes to the synthesis of various UDP-sugars which include modified GlcUA moieties.
