Some results of lidar probing of the troposphere

Results are summarized on lidar (laser radar) soundings of haze layers, clouds and rain showers, using a lidar with 90 pulses min−1. A multi-layer echo structure was sometimes observed in the first kilometre above ground. Other soundings show wave motion in a scattering layer, with wave structure similar to that observed with centimetric radar. Results in heavy rain illustrate the inhomogeneity in the intensity over distances of a few tens of metres.
