Proceedings of the 15th international conference on Human-computer interaction with mobile devices and services

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 ACM International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services---MobileHCI 2013. MobileHCI is the world's leading conference in the field of Human-Computer Interaction concerned with portable and personal devices and the services to which they enable access. MobileHCI provides a multidisciplinary forum for academics, hardware and software developers, designers and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for effective interaction with and through mobile devices, applications, and services. The conference represents research conducted at both academia and industry that ranges from fundamental interaction models to social and cultural aspects of everyday life with mobile devices and services. The continued commitment of the research community to the field is manifested by a large number of high-quality contributions. This year we received 238 paper submissions (128 full and 110 short paper submissions). In the other submission categories we received 48 poster submissions, 23 demo submissions, 18 doctoral consortium submissions, 7 industrial case study submissions, and 14 workshop submissions. A dedicated program committee and a high-quality review process are essential for a successful conference. For the third time we ran a cross Atlantic split committee meeting. A senior program committee of 40 internationally renowned scientists from academia and industry was assembled at two locations (Stuttgart, Germany and San Jose, California) that were linked by audio and video connections. Each paper (except two quick rejects) received 4 peer reviews as well as an additional meta review by the assigned program committee member. The in-person program committee meeting provided the opportunity to discuss the papers and reviews in detail and reach consensus on the final decisions. As a result of this review process 53 of the 238 submissions (22%) were accepted for inclusion in the final program to be presented in Munich in late August 2013. 34 of the 53 accepted submissions are full papers and 19 are short papers. In a shepherding process 18 of the 53 accepted papers were revised and improved under the expert guidance of a program committee member. The main topics covered in the proceedings are gesture and keyboard input techniques, multimodal input and output, content navigation and presentation on small displays, context and distractions, location and navigation, novel application areas, and security and privacy. The program committee awarded Honorable Mention Awards for the top 5% of all submissions for short and full papers: 6 full papers and 5 short papers received an Honorable Mention Award. Among these, one full and one short paper will receive Best Paper Awards. A jury of committee members has been established to judge which of the accepted papers represents the most outstanding contribution to the conference to receive this special recognition of excellence. This year's keynote speakers include Steven Feiner, a pioneer in computer graphics and augmented reality, and Gillian Grampton Smith, the leading academic in interaction design as taught at schools of art and design. They will provide different perspectives on the field and share their experiences with the participants.
