Synthesis and biological activity of polyketones

Polyketones have been prepared by reacting benzene, chloroacetyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane and dichloromethane using anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst and nitrobenzene as solvent. Polyketones were characterized by IR which showed the presence of carbonyl and chlorine groups in the resins. Thermal analysis showed the remarkable thermal stability of the resins. All the polyketones were tested for their biological activity against P. fluorescens, B. subtilis, A. niger and T. viride. The results show that most of the polyketones can be used as antibacterial and antifungal agents.
