Composition And Properties Of Extract Of Fiddleback (Loxosceles-Reclusa) Spider Venom Apparatus

A lethal extract of the venom of the fiddleback spider, Loxosceles reclusa , has been prepared. This extract was fractionated into several components, using gel filtration column chromatography and preparative disc gel electrophoresis techniques. Two of the isolated components are capable of producing lesions and death in test animals. The molecular weight of both components as determined by thin-layer gel filtration is approximately 24,000. The pI of both components as indicated by isoelectric focusing is 8·3.
