Summary Initial doses of aspirated milk cause a distinct decrease in paO2 (average of 30 mm Hg) and a substantially smaller pvO2 (6–12 mm Hg). Owing to a shift of the Hb dissociation curve under the effect of a decrease in pH, the a-v difference in saturation does not change significantly until the last dose. Acidosis gradually becomes worse, beginning in the arterial blood. After the last dose both pH values greatly approximate each other in the arterial and mixed venous blood, the values decreasing below 7. At the beginning, metabolic acidosis is compensated by hypocapnia, but the final picture is that of combined metabolic and respiratory acidosis.
