Infectious Replicative Intermediate Of Poliovirus - Purification And Characterization

The “replicative intermediate” of poliovirus has been purified from infected HeLa cells. Results of physicochemical analyses are consistent with the previously suggested structural model, viz., a branched molecule containing nascent single strands associated with double-stranded cores. Each molecule appears to contain several nascent strands and, therefore, several growing points. The native material is intrinsically infectious, in contrast to the replicative intermediates of RNA-containing bacteriophages.
