Case 40-2003: A 14-Month-Old Boy with Recurrent Abdominal Distention and Diarrhea

Presentation of Case A 14-month-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of recurrent abdominal distention, vomiting, and diarrhea. The boy had been born at another hospital at 34 weeks' gestation and weighed 2.56 kg at birth. He had been admitted to the newborn intensive care unit for three days, during which time he received antibiotics and had an unremarkable course. He was bottle-fed and tube-fed on his first day of life but was breast-fed beginning on the second day.
