Objective: The development of an inventory to assess depressive symptoms in such patients. Methods: Healthy participants (96), ALS patients (76), and patients with a depressive disorder (56) were presented with a newly designed inventory. On the basis of the results obtained the inventory was reduced to 12 items (ADI-12). Results: Depressive symptoms were found in 75% of the ALS patients. ALS patients were significantly less depressed than patients with a depressive disorder. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms occur in ALS-12 measures depressive symptoms ion severly paralyzed patients.
