Real-Time Control of Human Coagulation

In previous work (1) we showed that the dynamics of human blood clotting could be fruitfully modeled and simulated as a hybrid system (HS), i.e. one with interacting continuous and discrete parts. Here we show that, although a complete analysis of the hybrid system is (com- putationally) infeasible, analysis and control techniques can indeed be applied to a large, critical subsystem (corresponding more or less to the model of (2)), a set of about 80 ordinary dierential equations. We out- line the theory behind the control techniques and then demonstrate in a series of simulations their application to control of pathological blood clotting, both hypercoagulatory (Factor-V Leiden) and hypocoagulatory (hmophilia A).
