Characterization and oxidation of chromium(III) by sodium hypochlorite in alkaline solutions

Oligomers of Cr(III) are oxidized to Cr(VI) by hypochlorite in alkaline solutions. Similar to the oxidation of Cr(III) by hydrogen peroxide, the redox reaction with hypochlorite has two pathways dependent or independent of the concentration of hydroxide. The reaction rate generally decreases as the concentration of hydroxide is increased.
