Les anti-rétroviraux

It is essential to draw pratical conclusions from the multiple and various studies assessing antiretroviral treatments. Five molecules are presently available in clinical practice (AZT, DDI, DDC, 3TC, D4T) which are all nucleoside analogues inhibiting reverse transciptase and which have demonstrated a generally comparable efficacy, i.e. one that is transient and incomplete. Availability of these various compounds is interesting since their toxicities differ, thus offering an alternative in case of intolerance. Mainly, these antiretroviral agents may be given in combination, with a proven benefit demonstrated by two recent trials (Delta trial and ACTG 175) for patients who have not received prior treatment. These antiretroviral associations will therefore certainly become a reference for new therapeutic strategies. However, it is too early at present to define a pratical guide for these prescriptions. Many points remain to be clarified and particulary that concerning the moment when treatment should be initiated.
