Tactile Texture☆

Tactile roughness is a function of multiple tactile elements that can vary in their size, shape, and distribution on the surface. This article provides an overview of the factors that contribute to subjective roughness, including the physical structure of the surface and the exploratory strategy (active or passive; force; speed; direct or indirect (remote) sensing). The underlying neuronal coding mechanisms are also described.
