Information Lifecycle Management in City-Wide Ubiquitous Computing Environment

With the rapid growth of ubiquitous computing, it is possible to collect various kinds of information related to the cities from heterogeneous ubiquitous devices like RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, CCTV (closed-circuit television) and sensors. In addition, information from existing legacy systems (e.g. Intelligent Transport System, Urban Facility Management System) can be related to the previously mentioned information. The amount of collected information over ubiquitous computing environment is enormous and huge. While some information is meaningful and combined into event that can be defined as set of valuable information, some information may be meaningless and erroneous or may cause an increase in system complexity, overlapping investment costs and so on. Without proper management for this information, it is difficult to find valuable and relevant information. Therefore, in consideration of effective information management in city-wide ubiquitous computing environment, there must be a mechanism that can store and process the massive amount of information. In this paper, we organize the key aspects of ubiquitous computing environment from information lifecycle management perspective and outline the management issues and mechanism at each lifecycle stage.
