Research interests
Echo's research interests lie in cross-cultural management, cultural intelligence, and multiculturalism. She uses multiple research methods to investigate cross cultural differences in attitudes and behaviour and to explore how to improve the way people work with others in culturally diverse workplaces.
Her first research stream examines the differences in management practices across cultures, such as exchange ideology, psychological contract, and ethical emotions and behaviours.
Her second research stream takes an integrative approach and focuses on how to manage cultural diversity more effectively. In particular, she studies how cultural intelligence, the ability to adapt effectively in a novel cultural context, helps bridge and integrate differences across cultures and ultimately improve performance. Her current interests focus on understanding how this individual capability transforms to a group-level competence that contributes to the performance of multicultural teams. She received a joint research grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation Research to advance her research in this area.
She also investigates the role of bicultural/multicultural individuals in the workplace. Bicultural/multicultural employees have become more prevalent in the global workforce. However, research is just beginning to understand them. Her work examines the special skills and capabilities that multicultural employees may contribute to their organisations and unique challenges they face.
