Dr. Cohen received the 2019 AIChE Clarence (Larry) G. Gerhold Award from the separations Division, the 2003 Lawrence K. Cecil Award in Environmental Chemical Engineering from the AIChE and was elected AIChE Fellow in 2009. He is a recipient of the 2008 Ann C. Rosenfield Community Partnership Prize, a County of Los Angeles Commendation, a State of California Senate Certificate of Recognition, and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition (US) in recognition of his contribution to legislation to protect public health and dedicated service to the community.
Dr. Cohen is a recognized expert and technology innovator in water treatment and desalination, membrane separations, environmental impact assessment, toxicity modeling, machine learning and nanoinformatics. He has published over 270 research papers and book chapters in water technology, separations processes, transport phenomena, polymer science, and environmental engineering, in addition to five books (as Editor), and presented his work in 470 conference presentations and 190 invited talks. His research resulted in the development and deployment of advanced flexible, self-adaptive and energy optimal water desalination systems, new membranes and monitoring technology for membrane fouling, mineral scaling and membrane integrity. His contributed to environmental protection efforts to promote water reuse, develop clean drinking water supplies for disadvantaged communities, and reduce risks from exposure to chemical contaminants.
