His research interest is the applied AI such as intelligent multimedia processing, computer vision and information retrieval. He received the National Outstanding PhD thesis award, the Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award, Zhejiang Provincial Science Award First Prize, the Google Faculty Research Award, and the Australian Computer Society Gold Digital Disruptor Award. As a key team member, he achieved the best performance in various competitions, such as the TRECVID MED, the THUMOS Action recognition challenge, the MSR-Bing image retrieval challenge etc. His work on surveillance tracking was elected as one of the 13 Incredible Tech Inventions You Won't Believe You Missed In 2013 by the Huffington Post.
