The research focuses on how cells perceive signals from microenvironment to control cell functions and determine cell fate. And the basic goal of stem cell biology and cancer cell biology. At present, Dr. Bustamante-Marin is studying the role of primary cilia in the influence of obesity on cancer. Primary cilia play a role in cancer markers, including reprogramming of cell metabolism, avoiding apoptosis, angiogenesis, and migration leading to metastasis. In addition, signals from adipose tissue can promote obesity-related tumors. Understanding the role of cilia in adipose tissue, tumor microenvironment and crosstalk between participants can create opportunities for clinical intervention.
