个人简介
Dr. William F. McNeely, May 27, 1927 to January 2, 2011, devoted his working life to the practice of internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Raised in Greensboro, NC, the fourth son of pharmacist M. C. McNeely, he was a teenager during World War II. He server for one year as a pharmacists mate in the U.S. Navy (1945-46), leaving as the Navy down-sized at the end of the war. His education was accelerated, as was common with returning veterans, and he received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School in 1950 at the age of 23.
Following internship at Boston City Hospital and several one-year fellowships, Dr. McNeely joined the medical staff at the MGH in 1957. He established a private practice in internal medicine, attended patients hospitalized at the MGH, and taught medical students and residents. Later in his career, Dr. McNeely prepared case presentations for the Clinicopathological Conferences (CPCs) at the MGH. These teaching exercises, begun soon after 1900, still continue each week, and are published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Incidentally, Dr. McNeelys wife, Betty U. McNeely, edited those case studies from 1957 until her death in 1995.
