William D. O'Brien, Jr.'s research in the Beckman Institute deals with the mechanisms by which acoustic energy interacts with biological and nonbiological materials (physical acoustics), and applications of quantitative acoustic imaging in biology, agriculture, material science and medicine. The physical acoustics research activities focus on the fundamental understanding of how ultrasound interacts with biological materials, and specifically the role of heat and cavitation, and their relationship to the assessment of risk for the safe application of clinical ultrasound. The applications of quantitative acoustic imaging research activities with focus on the development of novel techniques to improve the quality of life including portable sonar systems for the Navy, defect detection in microwaveable food packages, in vivo ultrasonic microprobe sensor for tumor diagnosis, and subsurface detection of cultural artifacts. He is also involved in the development of an intelligent hearing aid, and an assessment of the propagation paths of acoustic energy into the human head under conditions of very high intensity acoustic pressure levels. The development and understanding of acoustic imaging and interaction concepts in medicine, biology and other materials contribute to the theme areas of Biological Intelligence.
