William J. Calhoun

William J. Calhoun, MD, is Nelda C and HJ Lutcher Stark Distinguished Chair, Professor of Internal Medicine, and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Calhoun earned his medical degree at Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine there. He served fellowships in Pulmonary Medicine and Allergy – Clinical Immunology at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, respectively. He earned a certificate in Medical and Health Care Management from Rice University in Houston, Texas. Dr. Calhoun until 2011 served as the Chair of the FDA Pulmonary Allergy Drug Advisory Committee, and a just completed a term as a standing member of the NIH IRAP Study Section. He Chairs the NIH Study Section on Ancillary Studies for Clinical Networks, and has chaired the Emerging Investigator Award, and Outstanding Investigator Award study sections for the NHLBI. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the American Federation for Clinical Research. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, & Immunology and the American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, the American College of Physicians, and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Calhoun serves as a journal reviewer for many journals, including the The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Journal of Physiology, and Chest. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including a recent publication for the Asthma Clinical Research Network in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr Calhoun’s research interests include the biochemical mechanisms of steroid resistance in severe asthma, translational science of proteomic biomarkers in asthma, and novel therapeutic agents and strategies, and is funded through the National Institutes of Health, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in addition to several industrial grants. At UTMB, Dr Calhoun chairs the Council of Vice Chairs of Research, which is a multi-departmental committee purposed with increasing cross-departmental research collaborations. He recently completed a term on the Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure Committee, and serves currently on several University committees, including the Scientific Integrity Committee and the Academic Progress and Promotions Committee.
