I am a theoretical physicist working in the field of Elementary Particle Physics. My personal goal is, whenever possible, to develop my studies to such a level that they will be applied to experiment. For a number of years I was a member of the L3 collaboration at LEP (CERN, Geneva) and suggested new measurements with LEP detectors. At the beginning of my research career, I proposed various methods of measurement of polarization of high-energy electrons including the celebrated laser polarimeter. These methods were widely employed at many laboratories (Novosibirsk, Orsay, Cornell, DESY, SLC and LEP) and, in particular, provided a basis for the precise measurements of the masses of φ, J/ψ, Υ and Z resonances. Later, I worked on a broad programme of calculating QED and QCD processes and the development of new analytical approaches. These include the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation in QCD and the application of the bright QCD coherence phenomena to the structure of QCD jets. I studied the finite-width effects in WW and tt¯ production and developed a technique for the calculation of the QED and QCD threshold effects for unstable particles. This, in particular, allowed the theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the W boson mass to be quantified. In the field of Higgs physics, my most important results include the original idea of associative H + W/Z production, the proposal to use a rapidity gap signature for
Higgs studies at high-energy hadron colliders and a new approach to search for and to identify the nature of the new objects including Higgs-like particles at the LHC by tagging forward protons. At present, I am actively involved in the calculation and analysis of diffractive photon mediated processes at the Tevatron, HERA RHIC and LHC. I work in very close contact with many experimental particle physics groups. A number of new experimental results motivated by me were reported at recent International Conferences. Currently, my main efforts focus on the theoretical motivation for ’forward physics’ studies at the LHC. It is widely accepted that the activity of the Durham group has served as a catalyst in the development of forward detector enhancements to the ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb detectors. I am a coordinator of the LHC Forward Working Group and a member of the Executive Board. I work in a very close contact with the experimental group from the Rockefeller University led by Professor Goulianos, who is a world leader in the experimental studies of diffractive processes at hadron colliders.
