Bashkirov (Member, IEEE) received the Diploma degree in nuclear physics and engineering (M.S. equivalent) from the National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI), Moscow, Russia, in 1979, the degree in 1983, and the Ph.D. degree in nuclear and particle physics from National Research Nuclear University, in 1996.
From 1983 to 1989, he was a Senior Researcher with MEPhI. From 1990 to 1999, he was a Guest Scientist with INFN, Italy, CERN, Switzerland, and also with DESY, Germany. Starting 1999, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the First Hospital-Based Proton Therapy Center, Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), CA, USA, from 1999 to 2004. In 2005, he became a Research Associate Professor with the School of Medicine and the Department of Radiation Medicine, LLUMC. Since 2012, he has been an Associate Professor with Loma Linda University, where he is currently with the Department of Basic Sciences, Division of Biomedical Engineering Sciences. He has been successful in developing novel instrumentation and analysis and Monte Carlo simulation software for proton and ion therapy and holds several patents. His current research interests include the clinical development of charged particle CT and nandosimetry to improve proton and ion therapy.
Dr. Bashkirov has served as Principal Investigator on the R01 grant to develop proton CT for biomedical applications from 2011 to 2016.
