Inspired by the concept of Precision Medicine, that includes research as a critical component, it was imperative that our science community understand the definition of Precision Genomics, which I defined within my lab and shared by request with the broader community through a published manuscript. Precision Genomics is defined as "determining all possible relevant variation within an individual to the precise nucleotide." It is essential to understand that while Precision Genomics shares a foundational principle within Precision Medicine, it functions as a distinct, albeit critical, component within the broader Precision Medicine paradigm, paralleling other specialized fields such as Precision Psychiatry and Precision Imaging. As a research laboratory dedicated to advancing Precision Genomics, we are committed to overcoming the current challenges that constrain the full realization of Precision Genomics for all individuals. Our efforts are concentrated on addressing five principal scientific limitations: 1) interpretation of noncoding variation, 2) variants missed due to genomic technology, 3) speed of the current “genomic workflow,” 4) combination of multi-hit rare and/or common variants, and 5) gene by environment effects. Currently, the main focus of my lab is to pursue each of these in neurodevelopmental disorders. As each of these areas are critical for the future, we work at the leading edge of genetic and functional approaches important for understanding human phenotypes and disease.
