个人简介
Professor Gill’s work predominantly centers around translating evidence in the fields of nutrition and obesity, into a format that is meaningful for policy makers and the wider community, with the overall objective of promoting good health and preventing chronic disease. He specialises in the analysis of research evidence and community needs around nutrition and weight loss programs, and using this information to tailor further research and/or communication messages to help meet these needs. His focus is on the epidemiology of obesity and improving food environments and public guidance for the prevention and management of obesity, within Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
He has extensively explored the concept of eating patterns based on ‘real foods’ as opposed to nutrients and the impact on health, e.g. by conducting epidemiological analyses, which highlighted evidence for the contribution of sugar-sweetened beverages to weight gain (leading to changes in nutrition policy by targeting these beverages for restricted consumption).
Current work is exploring the assessment and collation of evidence around effective lifestyle interventions that have occurred outside the controlled conditions of randomised trials. Projects include studies of individuals who have successfully lost weight without professional intervention, to understand their behaviour, social and demographic characteristics and weight loss strategies and their ability to maintain long-term weight loss. Results (including the most effective strategies) will be disseminated to the wider community through tailored communication programs.
