Professor Langrish is a world leader in drying technology, particularly spray drying and the drying of timber. His work, with Professor Fletcher, on transient flows in spray dryers, has uncovered new types of flow instabilities that are fundamental to improving practical outcomes in reducing the deposition of particles on spray dryer walls. This achievement is scientifically significant because it applies advanced computational modelling and physical understanding to the solution of important and common industrial process engineering problems.
