Kurt Kyser is currently the director of QFIR, the Queen’s Facility for Isotope Research at Queen’s University in Canada, which has the most complete suite of advanced isotope and chemical technologies supported by a research team with the combined experience spanning over 70 years within the areas of exploration, environment, biology, chemistry, geography, and forensics and authentication methods. QFIR provides interdisciplinary research for university, government, industry and private agencies on a global basis. Our research interests are focussed on using an integrated approach to understand the interactions between fluids and rocks and between the geosphere and biosphere. Inasmuch as most fluids and minerals usually contain H, C, O and S as well as trace elements, use of the isotopes of these elements in well-characterized samples can trace the origin, evolution, and timing of fluid-rock interactions and the flux of elements between the geosphere and biosphere. This approach fosters collaboration involving scientists from Canada, the USA, Europe and Australia, and from many in the mineral and environmental industries. These research programs normally involve extensive fieldwork in addition to laboratory work and the graduate students, PDFs and technical staff I advise are trained in field techniques, encouraged to develop their research skills and to publish their results. My programs are designed such that there is a balance between pure and applied research, a balance that is normally perpetuated by the HQP in their professional careers. I have trained 80 graduate students and 15 PDFs who currently have positions with universities, government and industry around the world. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
