I have two research areas. At the forefront of Physics I am working with my students on data collected by the ATLAS experiment located 100 meters underground at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN just outside of Geneva, Switzerland. There, colliding protons act as the means to provide the high energy environment to turn Einstein’s equation E=mc2 on its head and use the energy from the power grid to try to create exotic states of matter than we have yet to discover. We look for pairs of Higgs bosons, and their decays into B hadrons (particles containing a bottom quark) as tags to find such exotic states should they exist.
My other area of research is in the construction of new types of sensors used to detect the passage of sub-atomic particles. I am involved in characterizing Pixel sensors and other components of data readout systems for their radiation hardness as the radiation environment near these high energy collisions is quite harsh.
