I am leading the Ophthalmic Technology Laboratory at the ARTORG Center, University of Bern.
Research Interests:
My research interest are in the domains of medical image analysis, computer vision and machine learning. Most of my work deals with the development of computational methods for (a) inferring statistical models from images (object appearance and structure) and (b) using these models for recognition and detection tasks in a variety of medical and health related applications.
My interests have largely focused on situations where image analysis and machine learning can be combined to solve tasks in medicine, life sciences and robotics. In many of these cases, intelligent allocation of computer resources is demanded (CPU allocation, time, memory, etc...) to achieve a specific task. At the heart of theses challenges, often lies a Decision Problem, as to how to use resources in order to yield the highest throughput or achieve the task. As such, many of the problems I study are closely related to the fields of Active Learning and Sequential Experimental Design.
