Stuart is currently working for the IT Innovation Centre. The IT Innovation Centre is an autonomous industry-facing part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. They architect, engineer and integrate innovative IT systems, with a focus on collaborative R&D. They deliver strategies, road maps, proofs-of-concept, demonstrators and novel operational systems.
Stuart's role is a lead researcher & project manager. His research interests lies in the technology gap between machine learning and semantics. This includes the areas of feature extraction, natural language processing, ontologies and semantic reasoning. He has applied this research in various application sectors, including social media, creative industries, geospatial, environment, security and sensor domains. His PhD looked into recommender systems and ontologies, working under supervisors Prof Dave de Roure and Prof Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and was completed in Oct 2002.
