I am an Organizational Psychologist and Professor of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. My research is on non-technical skills and patient safety in surgery and other acute healthcare fields. I was one of the pioneers of the ‘Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons’ (NOTSS) behaviour observation system and have been fortunate to collaborate with colleagues around the world to advance the science in this area. Our current research is funded by National Institutes for Health (NIH) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), focusing on the relationship between non-technical skills and patient outcomes, global applications in low and middle income contexts, and developing technology to support astronaut crews manage medical events on future Mars missions.
