个人简介
Born on the 28th February 1965 at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Simon Boniface Boni is a highly motivated Research Scientist who has worked for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Dar es Salaam, Tanzania since July 2006 until recent. Brought-up in a peasantry family, Simon had developed interest in conducting researches in agricultural sciences so that he can find solutions to the problems and challenges that peasants face, and hence be able to contribute to the global efforts of ensuring food security and safety, thus alleviating poverty which is rampant within the peasantry communities.
He is professionally a Vector Entomologist, Horticultural and Crop Scientist. He also has acquired outstanding knowledge and experience on mycotoxicology, development and application of aflatoxin biological control technology (aflasafe) on maize and groundnut while at IITA. He has worked as a consultant on mycotoxin and aflasafe research activities until 30th April 2016 after working as a Research Associate in the same field from 2012. Initially he worked as a Research Associate and then as a Research Fellow (during his Ph.D research) on cassava pest and disease management in the same institute (IITA) from July 2006 to 2012. Simon has authored or co-authored more than 20 scientific papers/articles during the time he has been working for IITA and during his studies. He has attended a considerable number of scientific workshops/meetings and has given several presentations in some of them. He holds the following degrees: Ph.D (Zoology) in Vector Entomology, an M. Sc. in Horticulture and Landscape Techniques and a B. Sc. in Agriculture-Crop Science.
As a Research Associate and Consultant in mycotoxin activities at IITA, he had worked in the field, coordinated stakeholders and trained personnel in Tanzania and Rwanda on the use of GPS and sample collection survey techniques, sample handling and analysis of mycotoxins from maize, cassava and groundnut. He formulated protocols for those activities as well as mycotoxin fact sheet (in English, Swahili and Kinyarwanda) used for mycotoxin awareness creation to officials and farmers involved in the research activities. He has actively participated in aflasafe production in Tanzania in the late 2015 through early 2016 where more than 10 tons of the product were produced for research in three countries (Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique). He also has assisted IITA senior scientist to coordinate various activities and has fully participated in the aflatoxin biological control (aflasafe) efficacy trials being conducted on maize and groundnut in seven districts in Tanzania.
During the period he worked on cassava, Simon had opportunity to actively coordinate, visit and physically lead pest and disease diagnostic surveys in Tanzania, Burundi, Central African Republic and Rwanda, dealing with cassava mosaic disease, cassava brown streak disease, whiteflies, cassava green mites (and their natural enemies) and cassava mealy bugs. He also had opportunity to learn and apply polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in molecular diagnosis of cassava geminiviruses, cassava brown streak viruses and whiteflies for genetic sequencing in phylogenetic studies of the insect. He actively participated in formulation, training and implementation of different technical working tools.
Before joining IITA, he worked in flower industry in Moshi and Arusha, Tanzania between 1998 and mid 2006 in production of vegetatively propagated ornamental planting materials as Assistant Technical Manager, Technical Manager and later as a Research, Training and Development Manager in Mawenzi Cuttings Ltd and then in three sister companies: Multiflower Ltd, Arusha Cuttings Ltd and Greenstars Cuttings Ltd. During this period he contributed his knowledge to these companies and in return, he got a lot of experience in planning, implementing and evaluating the outcomes of different production techniques including plant protection to timely and precisely meet the requirements of the high quality-sensitive market in Europe.
Married to one wife with three children, Simon is a Tanzanian, fluent in English, French, Kiswahili and his mother tongue.
