Shihab Asfour received the Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, USA, in 1980. He was a Professor of industrial engineering with the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA, where he was the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center from 2000 to 2019 and the Director of the Biomechanics Research Group. From 1999 to 2018, he was the Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Miami. He was the Associate Dean for Academics with the College of Engineering from 2007 to 2018. He developed and implemented a large-scale ergonomics program for the reduction of musculoskeletal injuries at Florida Power and Light Company (FPL), Juno Beach, FL, USA. This work led to a major reduction of back injuries at FPL and has contributed to FPL being the first U.S. company to win the Deming Prize of Quality. He has authored over 340 articles in national and international journals, proceedings, and books. His publications have appeared in the ergonomics, human factors, spine, and IISE journals. He also edited a two-volume book titled Trends in Ergonomics/Human Factors IV (Elsevier Science, 1987) and a book entitled Computer Aided Ergonomics (Taylor and Francis, 1990). He was an elected fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.
