He is the vice president of China Association of Water-saving in Agriculture and Rural Water Supply, vice chairman of China Association of Agricultural Engineering, the member of Discipline Appraise Committee of State Council of China, the member of Science and Technology Committee of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Agriculture, Chairman of Chinese Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering Society and Vice-Chairman of Chinese Committee of Irrigation and Drainage. Also he is the Advisory Board Chairman of National Programme for Sustainable Development of Agriculture by State Council.
His research interests are mainly on the principle and practice of water-saving agriculture and water management in arid and semiarid areas. He has published more than 300 papers and 10 books, and supervised 51 Ph.D. and 62 M.S. students in water-saving agriculture and water management, two of them obtained the Excellent 100 Ph.D Papers Award. He has developed theories and practices to improve crop water use efficiency and regulated deficit irrigation, obtained evapotranspiration and crop coefficients and drewed the isomaps of water requirement for different crops in Northwest China, presented some methods for high efficiency irrigation, and established the optimal regional water management model in Northwest China, which have been applied broadly in Northwest China.
