Our translational research focuses on applying electrophysiological measures, imaging modalities, and innovative bioengineering approaches to diagnose and treat neuromuscular disorders. These techniques include electrical impedance myography, quantitative ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and nerve and muscle excitability techniques including threshold tracking as well as microneurography. We are also interested in studying mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and developing new therapeutic agents that can improve function and health. Some of our longer-term goals include developing novel, powerful biomarkers to assist with disease diagnosis, the assessment of progression, and the effect of therapy. The neuromuscular disorders we are studying include but are not limited to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, disuse atrophy, inflammatory myopathies, localized nerve issues, radiculopathy, and polyneuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy. The lab also has great interest on brain, nerve and muscle alterations as one experienced during spaceflight and partial gravity as would be experienced on the Moon or Mars.
