个人简介
Cancer remains one of the UK’s major healthcare challenges, with approximately 300,000 people diagnosed with malignant cancer each year. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) accounting for almost 26% of all newly diagnosed cancer cases in men. This fellowship aims at advancing current optical fibre sensor technology to improve prostate cancer treatment through radiation therapy. Two separate sensors are being developed: i) to measure the oxygen concentration of the tumour, which determines how resilient the tumour is to radiation, and ii) to measure the real-time radiation dose to the tumour and/or nearby critical structures, e.g rectal wall or urethra. Knowledge of this information will allow the radiation oncologists to develop improved personalised treatment plans for patients, ensuring the effective dose is delivered to the target area with minimal side effects to vital organs.
